With consumers wanting more fuel-efficient vehicles along with increased light-weighting demands and the evolving mobility ecosystem, automakers are turning to Novelis aluminum for innovative, sustainable solutions that enable the next generation of vehicles. We work alongside our customers from program development to launch, to create new products and processes to meet the industry’s evolving needs.
Our products are featured in more than 225 different models on the road today. Many of the world’s premier brands have called on us to help design the safest, strongest and most durable cars and trucks ever imagined.
With more than 40 years of experience in the automotive industry, Novelis has a rich history of innovating alongside our customers to make next-generation vehicles a reality.
To help answer new design challenges, Novelis has a team of specialists available to assess the mechanical properties, design flexibility and range of fabrication alternatives needed to realize next-generation vehicles.
As aluminum can be joined with other metals, Novelis has expertise in mixed-material construction and provides technical guidance to automakers from design to production. This allows automakers to be highly flexible when choosing the right mix of materials.
Novelis’ Customer Solution Center network brings research and technical platforms, operations and commercial development together to increase collaboration and innovation with our partners.
Our team works with OEMs to determine how to maximize lightweight, high-strength aluminum to design the best solutions for specific applications at the right cost to better compete against steel and other materials. The facilities are led by industry-leading researchers, designers and engineers located in close proximity to automakers’ manufacturing sites in North America, China and Europe. In addition, Novelis CSCs will provide an environment to demonstrate product concepts, simulate customer processes and performance in use, as well as leverage data to educate stakeholders throughout the supply chain about elements ranging from forming to costing.
Novelis’ capabilities in material formability, joining technology and strength innovation are unmatched in the aluminum industry. Working alongside our customers, we create custom alloys and manufacturing processes to cost-effectively meet their vehicle development needs.
We have experienced teams of engineers, metallurgists, chemists, computer scientists and other experts devoted to developing the next generation of aluminum solutions. In fact, 40 percent of all Research and Development investment at Novelis is dedicated to creating innovative solutions for automakers. To ensure our products work seamlessly in our customers’ manufacturing environments, members of our team work in-house as resident experts to help our partners design next-generation aluminum products.
Novelis has developed the first aluminum sheet battery enclosure solution to address customers’ needs in the rapidly growing electric vehicle and battery markets.
As the world’s largest recycler of aluminum, Novelis leverages aluminum’s unique properties to deliver sustainable solutions that help automakers appeal to consumers and meet government regulations – all while reducing environmental impact and driving cost efficiencies.
In collaboration with our customers, closed-loop recycling allows us to take back as much aluminum scrap as possible and insert it directly back into the supply chain. Closing the loop preserves the value of the alloy, reduces recycling and transportation costs, minimizes environmental impact and establishes a secure supply chain.
Sustainability is core to Novelis’ business and the unique properties of our aluminum are central to meeting the sustainability needs of our automotive customers. Our expertise empowers us to understand, and help customers address sustainability throughout the life cycles of aluminum.
Over the past decade, increasing carbon emission standards have driven automakers to seek alternative material solutions to reach dramatically higher fuel efficiency without compromising the level of performance and safety consumers expect from their vehicles.
To meet these standards, Ford introduced a radical redesign of its best-selling Ford F-150 pickup truck, replacing its steel body panels with lightweight aluminum. However, to make this redesign a possibility, Ford required a partner that had extensive experience in aluminum innovation and deep expertise in high-volume production.
Building on its extensive technical capabilities developed through a 20-year partnership with Jaguar Land Rover, Novelis was selected as a key supplier for the new aluminum-intensive Ford F-150.
To improve the environmental impact and performance of its vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sought to innovate and incorporate aluminum into their design and manufacturing process.
As a lightweight and infinitely recyclable material, an aluminum-intensive design would lower the vehicle body mass, improve fuel efficiency and, as a result, reduce the environmental footprint and running costs for customers.
However, JLR wished to mitigate the energy and cost-intensive nature of using primary aluminum in the production process and turned to long-standing partner, Novelis, for a high-recycled content material solution.
