Supporting Recycling Education and Collection
For over 20 years, Novelis has been an active member of the European Aluminium Packaging Group, supporting recycling initiatives in more than 25 countries. Our collaboration with customers aims to achieve 100% recycling of beverage cans across Europe by 2030. This ambitious goal underscores our dedication to a circular economy and sustainable practices.
Our involvement with the Every Can Counts® program for over a decade has been instrumental in promoting on-the-go recycling at sports events, beaches, and festivals. By partnering with can makers and aluminum suppliers, we have developed a global program that encourages recycling in public spaces.
In the United States, we collaborate with The Recycling Partnership, an NGO committed to advancing a circular economy by building a better recycling system, to tackle challenges in the recycling industry. Together, we develop new initiatives to improve recycling rates among consumers and promote sustainable habits.
We also partner with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home, to integrate recycling into their U.S.-based affiliates. This program not only incorporates recycling in their offices and build sites, but also generates funding for their home-building initiatives, aligning with our commitment to community development and environmental sustainability.
In Brazil, Novelis directly recovers approximately 60% of all beverage cans consumed in the country through a network of company-owned and third-party recycling centers, significantly contributing to the country’s aluminum can recycling success.
Our Recycling League in Brazil brings together all providers in the aluminum supply chain to promote aluminum recycling. We have also increased our engagement with recycling cooperatives to ensure the holistic well-being and professional development of workers participating in aluminum recycling. These efforts are crucial in fostering a sustainable and inclusive recycling ecosystem.
Our Can Crush campaign in Seoul, South Korea, is a testament to our commitment to inspiring better recycling habits among individuals. By raising awareness and encouraging responsible recycling behaviors, we aim to make a significant impact on local communities and the environment.
At Novelis, our community engagement efforts are a vital part of our Purpose of shaping a sustainable world together. By developing innovative collection solutions and fostering strong partnerships, we are making meaningful strides toward a more sustainable and circular future. We are proud of our progress and remain dedicated to expanding our impact globally.

In a recent commentary published in Recycling Today on June 22nd, Greg Schlicht, Senior Vice President of Global Beverage Packaging at Novelis, discusses the immense benefits of increasing aluminum can recycling rates in the United States.
Currently, the U.S. recycles only 45% of aluminum beverage containers, lagging behind countries like Brazil and Germany, which achieve nearly 100% recycling rates. Recycling aluminum not only saves 95% of the energy compared to producing new aluminum but also has the potential to create over 100,000 jobs, raise wages, eliminate 1.3 million tons of landfill waste, and add $1.6 billion in annual sales.
Novelis is at the forefront of this initiative, investing in and expanding our recycling ecosystem. We are also advocating for supportive legislation to increase recycling rates and promote a circular economy for aluminum.

This investment underscores our strong commitment to sustainability as we continue to drive the transformation of the aluminium industry towards full circularity and lead the market with innovative, high-recycled and low-carbon aluminium solutions.
The expansion involves constructing a new dross house, three new bag houses, and installing advanced shredding, sorting, de-coating, and melting technologies. These upgrades will boost the plant’s recycling volume and efficiency, resulting in an annual CO2e reduction of more than 350,000 tonnes for Novelis Europe.
The project is expected to begin commissioning in December 2026. Once operational, the facility will be able to recycle 100% of UBCs to be collected under the future UK deposit return scheme. This will create a local, fully circular system that will avoid the need to export scrap exports from the UK.
We are excited to announce that Novelis has been shortlisted for the prestigious World Sustainability Awards 2024 for our entry “Novelis Partners with OEMs for Closed-Loop Recycling” in the Sustainable Technology Provider Award category. This recognition celebrates our commitment to sustainability and innovation in the aluminum industry.
Overview of the Entry:
Novelis, the global leader in aluminum recycling and a key supplier to the automotive industry, has established groundbreaking, closed-loop-recycling partnerships with several major automakers. These partnerships allow us to reclaim and recycle aluminum scrap generated during OEMs’ manufacturing processes, turning it back into high-quality aluminum sheets for new vehicle production.
The Challenge:
The automotive market presents unique challenges in recycling. Traditionally, automakers sold their aluminum scrap to recyclers, leading to inefficiencies and unnecessary costs. This process often downgraded the high-value aluminum scrap, preventing it from being reused in new automotive parts.
Our Approach:
Recognizing these inefficiencies, Novelis develops innovative closed-loop recycling systems in collaboration with automakers. These systems ensure the highest value use of aluminum scrap, maintaining the integrity of high-value aluminum sheets and reducing carbon emissions.
Outcome:
As the world’s largest recycler of aluminum, Novelis leverages the infinite recyclability of aluminum to deliver sustainable solutions. Recycling aluminum uses only 5% of the energy required to produce primary aluminum, reducing carbon emissions by up to 95%. Our closed-loop-recycling partnerships help automakers reduce their environmental impact, meet regulatory requirements, and appeal to eco-conscious consumers.
