Novelis Creates Sustainable, Performance Innovations for Can
Novelis is the largest producer of aluminium beverage can sheet and the world’s largest recycler of used beverage cans – recycling more than 82 billion cans annually. Together with our customers, we work to develop new can shapes and sizes, new surface finishes as well as recycling alloys to reduce the carbon footprint of cans.
NEW: Laminated aluminium for can ends

With the new black-laminated aluminum can end material, Novelis offers a sustainable product innovation attractive to both beverage brands and can makers.

Lamination for improved performance

Excellent performance

  • Improved optical surface performance
  • Homogenous thickness and color stability
  • Less dusting and cleaning of the can making lines
  • Plug and play: No change of can making equipment

Fulfills all regulatory requirements

  • Lamination film is free of BPA (Bisphenol A) and PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances)
  • Lamination film is an established product for the food industry
  • Contains no BPA, styrene, MOSH, MOAH

Supports your sustainability goals

  • Approx. 33% less CO2 generation compared to the conventional liquid coating*
  • No solvents evaporated in  the application process
  • No adverse impact on recyclability of used beverage cans

* reduction refers to the lamination step (including scope 3 for the laminate) versus the standard coating process (including scope 3 for the coating)

Lamination saves CO2 Emissions

Black lamination reduces the CO2 footprint of can end surface treatment by about 33% versus a regular liquid coating process.

This is not the saving on the entire product – it refers to the lamination versus the coating process of the aluminium strip.

Surface Quality is the focus

New surface finishing:
Laminated Can End Stock

At the Novelis site in Göttingen, Germany, which specializes in surface finishing of rolled aluminum, the laminating film is applied to the aluminum surface by a combination of pressure and heat. Just Plug and Play: the production of laminated beverage can ends does not require any changeover of the can production lines.

Black can ends

  • Less Non-Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS) are generated
  • For a black laminated material, a third-party institute conducted “sweat and saliva”– performance. No color release was detectable
