Novelis Safety Absolutes and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Novelis is committed to providing safe working conditions for all of our employees, contractors and visitors. As part of this commitment, Novelis has established seven critical procedures, or Safety Absolutes, to help protect against serious injury. Additionally, the Novelis Contractor Safety Process, in collaboration with Avetta, the leading provider of supply chain risk management software, ensures that contractors stay safe while working on our premises.

Control of Hazardous Energy (LOTO)

Employees must achieve a zero-energy state and secure against re-start before performing maintenance or working on equipment.

Machine Safeguarding

All machine safeguarding devices or systems must be operational before operating the machine. Removing or bypassing machine safeguarding is strictly prohibited.

Mobile Equipment & Pedestrian Safety

Only trained, certified and/or licensed employees may operate mobile equipment – and only if all safety features are operable and the load does not obstruct the operator’s view. Safe operating and pedestrian safety procedures must be followed at all times.

Confined Space Entry

Employees are prohibited from entering a permit-required confined space until issued a fully executed permit indicating all specified safety conditions are met.

Cranes & Lifting Equipment Safety

Only trained, certified and/or licensed employees may operate cranes – and only if all safety features are operable and the load does not obstruct the operator’s view. Operators are prohibited from taking a suspended load over a person, and pedestrians are prohibited from walking under a load suspended by a crane.

Molten Metal Explosion Prevention

Employees are prohibited from contaminating a scrap stream, and molten metal processing equipment must not be operated with known contamination.

Fall Prevention & Protection

Work at heights above 4 feet (1.22 meters) is only permitted when following fall protection guidelines that range from standard railing systems, to secured ladders or full body harnesses and shock absorbing lanyards.
