Novelis is the world's largest recycler of aluminum beverage cans and a leader in establishing industry programs to promote aluminum collection and recycling in many of the countries in which we do business. We process nearly 40 billion used aluminum cans each year - enough to circle the globe 100 times if laid end-to-end. But we're always striving for more; our goal is to be the world's largest recycler of all aluminum products.
Our aluminum recycling capabilities allow us to produce the highest-quality recycled material, ideal for use in premium applications, without compromising on energy conservation or natural resource protection. Novelis operates aluminum recycling facilities on four continents, each with the ability to recycle post-consumer scrap as well as pre-consumer scrap generated during our customers' manufacturing processes and internal scrap generated during the aluminum rolling process. As a result, more than one-third of our total flat-rolled product comes from recycled aluminum every year. This recycling loop can be repeated endlessly because, unlike many other materials, aluminum does not degrade during the recycling process.
Each year, our recycling efforts allow us to:
- Reduce the need for primary aluminum by nearly one million metric tons.
- Prevent emission of more than eight million metric tons of greenhouse gases—the equivalent of taking nearly 1.5 million gasoline-powered automobiles off the road for 12 months or flying 3.5 million people round-trip from Atlanta to Paris.
