Cleanup Efforts in Korea Revive a River

Novelis Korea has helped turn a highly polluted river into one of the cleanest in Korea. Taehwa River, which runs through the city of Ulsan, was once a symbol of water pollution. However, the city, environmentalists, businesses and residents recently joined forces to revive the river, and their efforts have paid off.

While the city has improved the local sewage system, removed piles of waste from the river bed and restored the eco-system, local businesses, residents and environmentalists have helped maintain the river’s beauty with regular cleaning and maintenance. Through this campaign, known as “One Company, One River,” Novelis Korea’s Ulsan Plant EHS team has taken charge of a one kilometer stretch along the river, gathering trash and planting flowers. The combines efforts of the city government and the private sector have completely transformed the river.

In fact, there was a time when the river was so polluted from nearby industries that local residents were reluctant to open their windows because of the smell. Now, fish thrive in the cleaner waters. People walk and jog along the riverbank – even play water sports.

In December 2006, the city recognized Novelis Korea with a plaque for the company’s role in such a significant transformation, as well as their ongoing commitment to keep the river clean. As of early 2007, Ulsan Plant employees have participated in 38 clean-up sessions since 2005.
