Novelis is the world's largest aluminum can recycler. We are a leader in establishing industry programs to promote aluminum collection and recycling in many of the countries where we operate.
Many Novelis plants have the facilities to recycle post-consumer aluminum as well as scrap aluminum generated during the manufacturing process. This recycled metal is then primarily utilized by Novelis’ own rolling facilities to produce new can sheet. This recycling loop can be repeated endlessly because, unlike many other materials, aluminum does not degrade during the recycling process.
Novelis annually recycles more than 38 billion used beverage cans -- enough to circle the earth more than 100 times if laid end to end.
The environmental benefits of aluminum can recycling are significant because aluminum produced from scrap requires just 5 percent of the energy needed to produce primary aluminum -- which means that up to 95 percent of related emissions, such as greenhouse gases, are avoided.
Following are some of the environmental benefits from recycling one tonne of aluminum:
- Saves 95 percent of the energy required.
- Avoids the emission of about 10 tonnes of CO2 equivalents.
- Reduces the use of natural resources and chemicals (caustic soda, aluminum fluoride and lime).
- Eliminates the need for 5 tonnes of bauxite ore to be mined.
- Eliminates the generation of nearly 2 tonnes of red mud byproduct.
- Minimizes our overall impact on biodiversity.
